How can I get a map of North Carolina and/or individual counties?

What are mile markers (MM)?

Mile markers (abbreviated MM) are the small green signs with white numbers located off the shoulder of major highways. They provide a reference point along the route and are placed every mile.
  • On north-south routes, Mile 0 begins at the southernmost point and increases as you travel north.
    • Example: On I-95, Mile Marker 0 is at the NC/SC border and Mile Marker 182 is at the NC/VA border.
  • On east-west routes, Mile 0 begins at the westernmost point and increases as you travel east.
    • Example: On I-40, Mile Marker 0 is at the NC/TN border and Mile Marker 420 is in Wilmington.
Mile markers also correspond to exit numbers along all interstate routes in North Carolina.

What types of events are shown in DriveNC?

The DriveNC system includes major crashes, construction, snow and ice, and the effects of severe weather on road conditions on roads maintained by NCDOT.
Information on these types of events is entered by NCDOT employees with the goal of having the information be as timely, accurate, and helpful as possible.
NCDOT reports the events that we are aware of. Not every event that occurs on the highway system will be shown in DriveNC.

Does DriveNC provide data about vehicle height/weight restrictions on roadways?

DriveNC does not provide this information.
Users may find it in third-party truck navigation apps. Remember: navigation apps like Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Waze are meant for regular cars and small trucks and are not designed for large vehicles or tractor-trailers.
Information on Truck Restricted Routes is available through NCDOT.
